Tim Richards was handicapped in every way. Born crippled, with no legs, cared for by an old-fashioned grandmother, he was hidden from society. The deformed but energetic, considerate and intelligent young man meets Sandy, a seventy-year-old wiry, tireless, weather beaten lone sailor with a wooden sailboat. The two become close friends and enjoy a peace together neither has known before. Tim realises his dream of learning to sail. The close bond induces Tim to open up discussing his emotions, fears and psychological problems connected with his deformity. Set in the Great Barrier Reef region, many colourful Australian characters are introduced from the small country town. Both Tim and Sandy find mates and the two couples learn they share similar interests and philosophies-in spite of the fifty years age difference. The four have thoughtful concern for each other with emotional, often humorous, dialogue that substantiates not only can they live in each other's company -they prefer no other.
